For 25 years, Oklahoma’s Main Street program has been pumping new life back into the heart of communities across the state. Combining historic preservation and downtown revitalization efforts with powerful economic stimulation, Main Street restores the core assets of our communities and enhances the quality of life for our citizens.

“The Main Street program has completely transformed our downtown business district. We went from having 65% building occupancy to over 90% occupancy, and investment has been pouring in from both inside and outside of the community. We now have a very busy, active Main Street — even after hours — with a newly refurbished theater, restaurants and boutiques. The Main Street program has greatly enhanced Collinsville’s quality of life, and it is an integral part of our community.” Stan Sallee, Economic Development Director, City of Collinsville

Main Street Associate Communities

The Oklahoma Main Street program is now taking applications for the Associate level of the statewide program. The two year associate program is for communities to build capacity to do a fully designated Main Street program. The successful applicant into the program will have access to limited Main Street services, as well as have limited Main Street requirements. The point is to work toward building capacity for the organization that will lead the community into more successful downtown development. Associate programs will still be expected to have paid part-time staff equaling one person for 20 hours a week. Associate Program will also operate with a volunteer board of directors, much like the fully recognized programs.

Four-point Approach

The Main Street program encourages economic development in Oklahoma communities through historic preservation in ways appropriate to today’s marketplace. By refocusing efforts to bring vibrancy back to a commercial district, your community can find the self-reliance and empowerment it needs to rebuild a commercial district and increase the quality of life for residents.

The Main Street Four-Point Approach™ is tailored to meet the needs and opportunities of each community. It encompasses work in four distinct areas – Design, Economic Restructuring, Promotion, and Organization – that are combined to address all of the commercial district’s needs.

The first step is getting everyone to work toward the same goal. To have a successful Main Street revitalization program, your community needs to bring together the human and financial resources to reach your goals. A governing board and standing committees make up the fundamental organizational structure, while a paid program director coordinates and supports community volunteers. By using this structure, your community can build the consensus and cooperation needed to bring vibrancy to a commercial district.

Marketing is a vital component of a successful Main Street program, framing a positive image and encouraging consumers and investors to live, work, shop, play, and invest in the district. Through local volunteers, you can market your district’s unique characteristics to residents, investors, business owners and visitors. Efforts such as advertising, retail promotional activity, special events, and marketing campaigns will improve consumer and investor confidence and encourage commercial activity and investment in the district.

The appearance of your Main Street district sets a vital first impression for your community. Capitalizing on its best assets – such as historic buildings and pedestrian-oriented streets – is just part of the story. By adding in an inviting atmosphere through attractive window displays, parking areas, building improvements, signs, sidewalks, landscaping and more, your community will a portray positive visual message about what your district has to offer.

Economic Restructuring

The Main Street program helps make existing business owners more competitive while recruiting new businesses and economic uses to create a commercial district that responds to today’s consumer needs. By diversifying your district’s economic base and converting unused or underused commercial space into economically productive space, your community can strengthen its economic assets and boost the profitability of the district.

Main Street Awards

The Oklahoma Main Street Center holds an annual awards banquet each year where the accomplishments of local Main Street communities in various categories of community and economic development are recognized.

These awards, sent in by the local Main Street Programs, showcase the enthusiasm, creativity and responsibility toward increasing revenue and creating jobs for their local downtown business districts. Awards cover each of the Main Street Program’s Four-Point Approach to local economic revitalization including:

  • Organization
  • Promotion
  • Design
  • Economic Restructuring

In addition, the “Main Street Community of the Year Award” is also given out to a deserving community. This award recognizes quality in program activities and commitment to Main Street principles.

Board members from each community are recognized as well as the local crowning achievement.
